Born one of eleven children, John Edward Shewry, better known as Ned, grew up just outside the border of the Whangamomona Republic. At 17, Ned and his brother Archie went to work, clearing their family farm with just an axe, a saw and a box of matches. His elders soon saw Ned's potential with the Axe and entered him into the local Wood Chopping competition. Disposing of the local competition, Ned would go on to win multiple world titles, setting world records along the way. His skills became legend that he could dehorn cattle with one swift swing. This NZIPA delivers a hefty blow of Rakau and Nelson Sauvin from Clayton Hops, and was first brewed for Smith's NZIPA Challenge 2024 in Queenstown, New Zealand.

The impressive brains in the Taranaki brewing industry once came up with a genius solution to a dangerous problem. The problem? People were developing a tolerance for Skunk Juice's powerful fruity essence. The solution? Double Skunk! What is Double Skunk you ask? It's a pungent brew of Shining Peak Brewing's Skunk Juice base, with extra malt, a lashing of extra sugar and almost triple the hops. Originally brewed for the inaugural Taranaki Beer Festival, this brew is an exercise in extravagance - a decadent example of Taranaki ingenuity.

Despite the name, 'German Hill' isn't particularly German at all. It earned its title from the blunt local assumption that any European accent must surely be German - when rather it was Inglewood's influx of Polish immigrants settling there in the area in the late 1800s. Close enough, right? Nestled just outside of Inglewood, the volcanic mound originally known as Atoa Iwa had previously served as a perfect kainga for local iwi, giving commanding views of the surrounding land. It also boasted several clean, bubbling springs of water known for its excellent mineral composition. Raise a stein and give a mighty Prost to this beer, brewed with traditional German malt and hops, with inspiration taken from the pure, fresh springs of German Hill.

Bordered by picturesque tank farms, beautiful power pylons and a strikingly gorgeous concrete chimney stack, the Sugar Loaf Islands in New Plymouth mark one of New Zealand's most sublime and lush beach settings - Back Beach. Best accessed at low tide, Parakaki or 'Seagull Rock' is a short but treacherous swim away and is home to a secret 'lagoon' on its back side - a beautiful rock pool of blue water well below skinny-dip temperatures. This crisp Mexican Style Cerveza is brewed with a hint of maize and is best served ice-cold at the height of beach season.

Back in the day, Whare Matangi, estranged son of Ngarue, was given a magic dart, or tara, that would lead him to his father. After a few throws the tara hit Ngarue's house at the mouth of the river. The place became known as Te Whai-tara nui-a-Ngarue, or Waitara. Shining Peak's own Magic Dart aims for an American-style golden ale with a combo of US and kiwi hops combining sweet stonefruit and tropical aromas.

The bustling community known as Tarata is home to less than six hundred people, but close to a couple of hundred thousand sheep. Known for its winding roads, wool-shed parties and red-band tan-lines, Tarata is now home to Wayward Hops - a burgeoning Hop Farm established by Tim and Maggie Verry, under the wise tutelage of Kevin Murphy in 2022. Oapui Road Pilsner is a crisp brew, fermented cold, and liberally hopped with freshly picked Riwaka cones grown in the heart of Taranaki's back-country.
